This was a speech given by an EELC student during its official opening. Her name has been changed.
My name is Melissa. I am 15 years old. I am from Pakistan. I would like to share with you my experience in ERLC (ElShaddai Refugee Learning Centre) and EELC (ElShaddai eLearning Centre). I started schooling in ERLC in 2013. I was 12 years old and had been in Malaysia for one year. Before that I just stayed at home as I could not attend school as a refugee. I felt very bored at home and I wanted to continue my studies. I never lost hope but prayed to God every day because I believed God would help me.
One day, my mother met a Pakistani lady who told her about ERLC. She was so excited that she told my father about it immediately. My dad took my brother and I to Klang to look for ERLC. By the grace of God, my dad was able to find the school without any problems.
On the first day of school, I was delighted when I realised that breakfast and lunch would be provided for free. It was hard for me to learn Bahasa Malaysia (BM) but I tried very hard. For the first two exams, I failed in BM but I managed to pass during the finals. I also passed UPSR. After that, I progressed from primary level (ERLC) to secondary level, which was in ElShaddai eLearning Centre (EELC), for which I am eternally grateful.
The transition from primary school to secondary school is challenging but I believe that under the patient guidance of my teachers, I can overcome all challenges. In EELC, I have gained a lot of knowledge in the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, and IT skills. Besides gaining head knowledge, I have learned the importance of character. I benefitted greatly from the weekly character building lessons. I learned values such as respect, punctuality, patience, and self-control.
Before joining EELC, I felt life was like a hopeless journey because I thought that after I completed form two in ERLC, there was no other ways I could further my studies. Now that I am studying in EELC, I see a bright light when I think about my future.
I will definitely not disappoint my teachers, sponsors, parents, and God for this opportunity to fulfil my dreams. I am grateful to everyone for making it possible for me and my friends to pursue our education and for giving us a hope for a brighter future.
Thank you for your attention and may God bless you.
